Curate your tie collection, and make sure you keep some cotton, linen, and silk ties in light colours for the spring and summer months and some wool, cashmere, and silk ties in faded colours to match your autumn/winter jackets. We have an article in the Gentlemen's Ties mini-series for the warmer weather, with the essential information from fabrics to pattern and colours.

As suits are heavier and tweed jackets are out for the autumnal weekends, it is time to change our ties around and move away from the light and bright colours of spring and summer to explore fabrics, colours, and patterns season-appropriate. Let's discover how to wear the classic fabrics for the colder season with a twist!

Autumn/Winter Fabrics: Wool, Cashmere, or Silk

When selecting your autumn/winter ties, choose pieces made from seasonal materials that never go out of fashion, such as wool, cashmere, or silk. Remember that the fabric is one of the most important elements when choosing a tie.

During the colder months, thicker wool and cashmere ties are appropriate for day events, and both combine well with wool and tweed jackets. As fabrics for colder months are heavier, medium to light interlinings are used to avoid making the tie too bulky.

Wool fabric is less shiny than silk, and the ties have a more casual feeling, appropriate for informal business settings. Wear your wool ties with tweed jackets and sport coats for the British country look. If the fabric is a wool and cotton blend, your necktie will be less prone to wrinkles.

Cashmere fabric ties compliment a rustic blazer or a tailored suit adding a touch of comfort and elegance to your outfit. Cashmere ties are statement pieces in a gentlemen's attire without being over-the-top in your daywear.

The four in hand knot is appropriate for wool and cashmere ties as it creates a medium-sized knot. Cashmere creases less, and such ties are suitable to wear when travelling. It is common for the cashmere to be mixed with silk or cotton since this gives the tie a better structure as the best qualities from each fabric is combined.

Silk ties can be worn all year round and in diverse situations, from dress to business and casual environments. Silk ties are considered a traditional choice for the winter season, especially if chosen in darker hues.

Autumn/Winter Patterns

Autumn and winter patterns move away from light coloured florals and into geometrical or stripe designs. Regimental or club striped ties made of wool or silk are suitable for formal occasions, while block striped ties on woven wool are appropriate for a more relaxed or casual setting.

Repeating printed patterns such as animals, symbols, or amoebas bring some fun to the outfits and are suited for the less formal day events. Seasonal plaid or herringbone cashmere ties are also suited for daywear.

Around Christmas time, we notice funny ties making a comeback every year – reindeers, snowflakes, and Santa themed ties are worn at informal office parties and family gatherings.

Explore texture in addition to fabric and colour by choosing designs such as Birdseye and herringbones, dogtooth, or barleycorns. Classical styles such as tweed are quintessential for colder weather.

Tweed is a wool patterned fabric that has become synonymous with Scottish and Irish style. Play with the width of the tie as broader ties will drape well, and you can obtain a more pronounced dimple within the knot.

Autumn/Winter Colours

When choosing a tie, one has two options either select a tie to compliment the suit colour or contrast it. In the colder seasons, colourful ties bring some life to outfits, especially shades that resemble changing leaves.

Essential wardrobe colours that work with most outfits in your wardrobe are plum, oxblood, burgundy, forest greens and are great for the colder months. Add style and dimension to your outfit through your tie.

Satin is a weaving technique of silk to create entirely smooth fabric with no texture on the surface. This technique is mainly used for solid colour ties and bow ties that are perfect for dress wear and formal attire.

You can set the foundation of a timeless wardrobe reflective of your style by incorporating ties for both the cooler and warmer seasons.
