The third episode of the Skinimalism mini-series focuses on one essential product from your beauty bag when following a correct skincare routine: the moisturiser. Cleansing, moisturising, and applying SPF is the streamline skincare routine that most people are starting to embrace. Younger, flawless, clear, healthy skin? Yes, please!

Dry skin is a serious problem that can not only keep you uncomfortable all day, but can also lead to a variety of skin conditions and inflammations, such as rosacea, psoriasis, itchiness, and skin tenderness.

To avoid having dry skin, you must include a good quality moisturiser in your skincare regime, which can keep your skin hydrated for at least 10-12 hours. It is a myth that only dry skin should use moisturisers and oily or combination skin doesn't. Everyone must use them to keep the skin's normal balance and have a natural, healthy glow. Let's find out more about these essential skincare products.

What Are Moisturisers?

A moisturiser can be any lotion, cream, or oil that you can apply on your skin to provide a much-needed hydration and suppleness. In perfect conditions, our skin can stay naturally hydrated with the help of sebum that our body secretes. But in the absence or shortage of this sebum, our skin becomes dry, and it starts demanding some lubrication in the form of moisturisation. Or, when is an overproduction of sebum, acne, and oiliness appear. So, you need a specific moisturiser to help counteract that.

If chosen wisely, a moisturiser can make your skin clear and soft and prevent ageing and give it a natural glow from within. It will improve your skin's tone and texture and hide any imperfections.

Why Is Important to Use Moisturisers?

Moisturisers work by providing hydration to the top skin layer, increasing its hydration level, preventing dryness, and protecting against sun damage. Under-moisturised skin becomes dry, flaky and tight, leading to itchiness and inflammation. Dehydrated skin is prone to fine lines and wrinkles, while moisturised skin looks smoother and healthier. Acne and pimples may develop due to dehydrated skin as well.

Repair the Skin

Skin sheds cells regularly and a well-moisturised skin repairs itself more quickly and efficiently, thereby staying protected better and longer.

Maintain Skin's Balance

Proper moisturisation can help the skin maintain its normal balance, resulting in fewer chances of developing any skin conditions.

Diminish Blemishes

When you have properly hydrated skin, it radiates a glow from within, therefore no imperfection is visible.

Fight Skin Ageing

Hydrated skin is also plump and firm due to which formation of wrinkles does not take place any soon. This is why people with moisturised skin look young for longer. Even if some fine lines and wrinkles have already developed, regular moisturisation in time can even diminish them.

Prevent Skin Problems

Dry skin is prone to several skin conditions such as rosacea, psoriasis, or atopic dermatitis. Moisturised skin helps with maintaining a healthy skin barrier that keeps it safe from severe alterations.

What Is the Best Moisturiser for Your Skin Type?

Regardless of the skin type, everyone should use a moisturiser. However, the ingredients and properties required by each person may be different. Consider your skin type and choose the right moisturiser accordingly. If you need guidance about determining your skin type check out our previous episode of the Skinimalism mini-series.

Dry skin

If you have dry skin, then you must look for a moisturiser that contains hydrating ingredients like shea butter, ceramides, lanolin, hyaluronate, etc. Moisturising twice a day is vital for dry skin to give it proper hydration.

Oily skin

People with oily skin also need moisturisation. However, you will need a product that can reduce the excessive production of sebum in your skin. So, you must look for a gel, lotion, or serum that has hyaluronic acid in it.

Combination skin

Combination skin types need a lightweight moisturiser that can be applied to both dry and oily areas.

Sensitive skin

People with sensitive skin must choose their skin products very carefully, as a wrong selection can irritate their skin and make it itchy, red or inflamed. You need to look for a cream-based moisturiser that is made up of natural, non-irritating ingredients only.

Do not to be afraid of using moisturisers, especially if you are following acne treatments that may be harsh to the skin.

Common and Efficient Moisturising Ingredients

While looking for a suitable skin moisturiser, you must study its list of ingredients and see if they suit you or not. Here are a few of the most commonly used ingredients in a hydration product.

Ceramides

These are lipids naturally found in our skin that help retain moisture and keep the epidermis intact. As a result, they fight environmental stressors and protect against pollution and irritants.

Hyaluronic Acid

One of the best known and loved skincare ingredients, this acid helps with the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. By moisturising your skin, it creates a plumping effect that makes it look smoother and glowing.

Glycerine

Glycerine is a natural skin humectant that can effectively keep your skin soft, supple, and hydrated. It also improves your skin texture and works best when combined with other replenishing and emollient ingredients.

Lanolin

Lanolin is an efficient emollient that many moisturising lotions and creams contain as an ingredient. It works by locking in moisture and preventing transepidermal water loss. However, it is not suitable for people with sensitive skin or those suffering from allergies.

Organically Harvested Seaweeds

Seaweed is one of the best cosmetic ingredients with high concentrations of vitamins and antioxidants. It softens the skin with the help of its healing and anti-inflammatory properties. Using a moisturiser containing seaweeds can tone and soften your skin to a great extent. Choose from the Green Angel's moisturisers range, a well-formulated product enriched with vitamin E or Neroli.

So, keeping all the information in mind, it is crucial to add a moisturiser to your skincare routine so that you have flawless, fresh-looking skin regardless of your age.
